Description:
Rediscover America’s own pro-democracy movement of 1776 with readings of the Declaration of Independence and other documents of the time, and in spontaneous protests and debates with historical re-enactors under the Liberty Pole erected as a gesture of defiance towards the British Empire.
Patriotic and loyalist document readings are scheduled at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM - protests or debates may occur at any time throughout the day. Visitors are encouraged to take on the role of war correspondents covering the unrest and to post their videos of the events to the museum's Facebook page and YouTube.
"In colonial Schoharie, as elsewhere, loyalties were divided and not everyone would have accepted the right of the Continental Congress to exist, let alone declare Independence from the established government,” said Carle Kopecky, director of the Schoharie County Historical Society. “Expect passionate exchanges about the rights of people to determine their own future, against the security of living in a rich and stable global superpower. You can hear echoes of their words in democracy movements now unfolding in the Middle East.”
These outdoor activities are held on the museum grounds at no charge. Inside the museum, exhibits on the Revolutionary War and a new Civil War 150th Anniversary exhibit are included in the regular museum admission price and free to SCHS members.
2.5 miles south of I-88 Exit 23, Schoharie, NY.
Open May-October Monday-Saturday 10:00 AM-5:00 PM, Sunday noon-5:00 PM.
Admission $5.00 for adults, $4.50 for seniors and $1.50 for children age 5-17
